These operations became a division of the privately owned Tillings Group in 1916 who had already commenced bus operation in the towns. The Company was established as a separate legal entity within Tillings as Brighton, Hove & District Omnibus Company Ltd in 1935 with a change of ownership when absorbed by the British Transport Commission in 1948 and the Transport Holding Company in 1962. The state owned National Bus Company took over in 1969 and Brighton, Hove & District Omnibus Company became dormant with its operations merged into the neighbouring Southdown bus company. The dormant Company began trading again in 1986 and was renamed Brighton & Hove Bus and Coach Company Ltd. Privatised through a management buy-out in 1987 it was acquired by Go-Ahead in 1993 which in turn was floated as a plc in 1994. On 17 November 1873, the first line using trams known as “American-style†was officially opened. This linked the North & East Station (Santa Apolónia) with the farthest point west of the Aterro da Boa Vista in the district of Santos. On 31 August, 1901, the Carris tram service was officially opened. The following years were marked by the electrification of the whole network as it was then. New routes were added along with an increase in fleet numbers, initially purchased in the United States and then, from 1924, assembled in the Company’s workshops. In 1940 the Portuguese World Exhibition took place in Belém and Carris bought its first 6 buses to bolster the supply of transport for visitors. On 9 April 1944, the bus service was officially opened. Over recent decades, there have been major changes in the tram fleet, as a result of the traffic conditions and their economic viability and social usefulness. This has led specifically to a gradual fall in the number of vehicles as well as the routes. At the same time, the bus fleet was increased, renovated and diversified to suit the demand and specific requirements of the routes. De Roemenen leefden toen nog onder het juk van het communisme. De stad ademde een deprimerende sfeer uit. Gebouwen en wegen waren slecht onderhouden. De mensen keken somber. Er was een grote schaarste aan elementaire levensbehoeften. Voor de levensmiddelen winkels stonden lange rijen. Bij de openbare toiletten kreeg je bij entree een stukje WC papier van 20 centimeter. Voor een Dollar kreeg je echter de hele rol mee!! De restaurants waren van erbarmelijke kwaliteit. Het vlees was niet zelden bedorven en soms stonden alleen hart en lever op het menu. Voor de vitamines zorgde vijf verschrompelde doperwtjes. Frisdrank was er in vele soorten. De kleur moest cola, sinas of cassis suggereren, maar de smaak was altijd dezelfde: Zoet en Chemische. De flessen bronwater waren voorzien van een fraaie opdruk met een tekening van een Romein om het een exclusief tintje te geven, maar de inhoud had net als het kraanwater een duidelijke chloorsmaak. Het openbaarvervoer deelde in de malaise. Trams en bussen maakten en verwaarloosde indruk en waren zonder uitzondering overvol. Één keer maakte ik een rit met een propvolle dieselbus waarin op het achterbalkon een lekke band lag. Om de deur te bereiken moest je daar overheen klimmen. Een andere keer zag ik een gelede trolleybus waarvan het achterdeel door z'n veren gezakt was. De achterkant sleepte over de grond. De bus was overvol en deed gewoon dienst..... De deuren van de trams werkte vaak niet. Daarom zag je regelmatig passagiers op bestuurders deuren open of dicht trappen. Na vier dagen besloten we het land te verlaten. Proviand inslaan voor de lange reis naar Belgrado viel niet mee. Een zak hele vette 'oliebollen' en een paar taartbodems waren de enige eetbare zaken die we bij de stationskiosk konden krijgen. Op het station stond een enorme express trein naar Belgrado. Bij de laatste grote plaats voor de grens werden de meeste wagens afgekoppeld. Een 2-tal schamele rijtuigjes met wat westerse toeristen passeerde uiteindelijk de grens met Joegoslavië. Voor de Roemenen was zo'n reisje over de grens niet weggelegd. It's a real paradise with terrific beaches. In 1997 I stayed there in a nice small hotel. An excellent Public Bus service was run by Autocaras Paya. Some remains of the narrow gauge railway used by the Salt Industry were still visible. Saturday 21 May 2005: Formentera is a small island at about 90 minutes by boat from Ibiza. It's a real paradise with terrific beaches. In 1997 I stayed there in a nice small hotel. An excellent Public Bus service was run by Autocaras Paya.
